Long before Verdun became the welcoming Adelaide Hills township we know today, there was a place where travellers could rest, share a meal and enjoy the company of others.
Established in 1853, the Stanley Bridge Tavern began life as a stopping point for bullock drivers making the long journey through the Hills from the Mallee. In fact, the tavern was welcoming guests more than two decades before the township of Verdun was officially established, becoming an important meeting place for travellers and locals alike. More than 170 years later, while the way people travel has certainly changed, the purpose of the tavern remains remarkably similar.
Today, Stanley Bridge Tavern continues to bring people together over great food, local wine, cold beer and genuine hospitality. Families gather in the beer garden while children explore the nature playground. Friends catch up over dinner, locals enjoy a drink after work, and visitors discover a country pub full of warmth and character. One of the venue’s most treasured reminders of its history can still be found in the original front bar, where the beautiful Stringybark shingle roof remains in place. It’s a feature that has witnessed generations of conversations, celebrations and community gatherings, and continues to welcome guests today.
While the tavern has evolved over the decades, with thoughtful renovations, expanded dining spaces and a revitalised beer garden, every improvement has been made with one goal in mind: preserving the character that has made Stanley Bridge Tavern such a special place within the Adelaide Hills.
